London Ambulance Service (LAS) covers an area of 620 sq. miles, serves one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities and is the busiest ambulance service in the UK. We handle over 1.9 million emergency calls from across the capital and attend more than 1.2 million incidents every single year as well as delivering a 24 hour NHS 111 Integrated Urgent Care Service in South East and North East London that we estimate will respond to around 1.4million urgent care calls by the end of the year. Our organisation employs over 6,000 staff, including volunteers, across London to respond to the health needs of over eight million people who live, work and travel in the capital.

LAS works closely with our NHS partners and are commissioned by 32 clinical commissioning groups spread across 5 sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) and NHS England for our specialist services. We work alongside London’s hospital, mental health and specialist trusts, as well as the five STPs across Greater London. In addition we work in partnership with the other emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance and London’s Resilience Forums to make sure we are ready and prepared to respond to major incidents and ensure we keep Londoners safe.

As the only pan-London NHS provider we have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in integrating access to emergency and urgent care right across London. LAS wants to provide their patients with the highest quality of care, which will contribute towards Londoners having health outcomes that are amongst the best in the world. Due to the fact LAS depends on highly available, functionally rich systems to operate 24 hours a day, a world-class service will need to be enabled by a well-developed and efficient ICT and informatics service. In addition to this, the services need to be cost effective, mitigate the threat of cyber-attack and evolve with the changing demands of a digitally enabled world.

Chief Information Officer (CIO)

Are you a transformational leader who can play an integral role in ensuring the services provided by LAS are continually advanced within a digitally enabled future? Can you help us deliver a digitally enabled organisation that ensures that anybody who needs a lifesaving service receives it?

We are looking for an individual who can transform the UK’s busiest ambulance service into the world’s leading digitally enabled ambulance service, guaranteeing staff have the tools they need to deliver outstanding care to patients.

Are you an inspirational leader who can push boundaries and new ideas, transforming complex business processes through innovation and seizing upon opportunities to enhance high quality digital services? Digital processes underpin business critical operations at LAS and the expectation of what can be achieved through digital innovation is always growing. The CIO’s primary responsibility and accountability will be developing and delivering information management and technology services across the Trust, and ensuring they align to the strategic objectives and ambitions of LAS. This includes ensuring that LAS’ business and clinical needs are reflected in technology applications and services, and that innovation is brought into the Trust to maximise productivity and performance.

The CIO will be commercially astute with strong negotiation skills and will have the skills and knowledge to protect the Trust from risks to its data and information, whilst promoting integration and interoperability across the London health and care community. LAS need an established Director who is experienced working with suppliers and has a track record of improving the productivity and efficiency of the department through reviewing contracts and services. The CIO will work very closely with both the Director of Strategy and Transformation and the Director of Programmes and Projects, and therefore will exhibit strong stakeholder engagement skills, with previous success in having worked closely with board members to provide assurance for the delivery and enablement of an organisation’s strategy.
